ODI Batsmen Rankings 2007 (All Teams)

Well January in back, and so is the second edition of Vineet's Cricket Rankings! And though there are some surprises the top of the heap is captured by none other than two of the most competitive cricketers of 21st century - Ricky Ponting followed by Matthew Hayden.

Ricky Ponting scored 1424 runs in 27 matches at an amazing average of 79.11 at a very high strike rate of 91.79!! He smashed 5 centuries and 8 half-centuries on the way to achieving this. Not to be left behind, Matthew Hayden scored 1601 runs in 32 matches at a very high average of 59.29 at a good strike rate of 89.19!! He smashed 5 centuries and 6 half-centuries on the way to achieving this.

Graeme Smith, Andrew Symonds and Sachin Tendulkar follow at 3,4 and 5. So the year 2007 was heavily dominated by Australian Batsmen, and the same way the Australian Team dominated the World Cricket.

Well, now for some surprises, Ten Doeschate remains in Top 20 (remember this site had picked him to be a player to watch last year). Shahid Afridi continued to dazzle with an annual strike rate of 161. A player like Haddin who has a position of No. 7 in the table continues to languish on the fringes of the Australian team (Does the Australian team also have a Seniorphilia like the Indians?). AB deVillers continued to be in the Top 10, a feat only Yuvraj could manage besides him. So we can certainly take deVillers and Yuvraj to be the players of the future!!

But the biggest surprise in Top 10 was DJ Reekers (Netherlands), and if you combine him and Doeschate you have a team to look out for - Netherlands!

Some surprises to watch for are LOB Cann (Bermuda), JM Davison (Canada), Robin Utthappa (India).

1 RT Ponting (Aus)

2 ML Hayden (Aus)

3 GC Smith (SA)

4 A Symonds (Aus)

5 SR Tendulkar (India)

6 Shahid Afridi (Pak)

7 BJ Haddin (Aus)

8 AB de Villiers (Afr/SA)

9 DJ Reekers (Neth)

10 Yuvraj Singh (Asia/India)

11 Mohammad Yousuf (Asia/Pak)

12 V Sehwag (Asia/India)

13 SB Styris (NZ)

14 Salman Butt (Pak)

15 LOB Cann (Ber)

16 AC Gilchrist (Aus)

17 HH Gibbs (SA)

18 S Chanderpaul (WI)

19 RN ten Doeschate (Neth)

20 JM Davison (Can)

21 RR Sarwan (WI)

22 Imran Nazir (Pak)

23 JH Kallis (SA)

24 MS Dhoni (Asia/India)

25 SR Watson (Aus)

26 KP Pietersen (Eng)

27 BC Lara (WI)

28 LPC Silva (SL)

29 S Matsikenyeri (Zim)

30 RV Uthappa (India)

Where are the top 5 batsmen of the year 2006?

Well RN Ten Doeschate whom this site had predicted as a hidden gem, continued his exciting run by remaining in Top 20. While Nathan Astle and Mark Trescothick faded into oblivion, Gilchrist continued to be a good bet, though Jayasuria was quite subdued this year.

40 ST Jayasuria (SL) (1)

19 RN Ten Doeschate (Neth) (2)

232 NJ Astle (NZ) (3)

retired ME Trescothick (ENG) (4)

16 AC Gilchrist (AUS) (5)

Team India In Control

Sachin Tendulkar gave glimpses of his vintage form by cracking an unbeaten 154 as India took control of the second cricket Test against Australia by taking a vital 69-run first innings lead.

The 34-year-old master batsman not only notched up his 38th Test century after a prolonged sequence of dismissals in the 90s this year but led a stunning Indian counter-attack which took the visitors to a commanding first innings total of 532. Matthew Hayden and Phil Jacques were at the crease with Australia reaching 13 for no loss at close on an eventful third day which was completely dominated by the visitors.

Resuming at the overnight total of 216 for 3, the famed Indian batting line up finally lived up to its reputation as they plundered runs at will on a good batting track at the Sydney Cricket Ground. If the stylish VVS Laxman had set the tempo with his breathtaking strokes on the second day, Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly with 67 maintained the flow with an exhibition of flawless stroke play to temper Australia's push for a record equaling 16th consecutive Test triumph.

Although Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni failed with the bat, Harbhajan Singh scoring 63 and Ishant Sharma scoring 23 helped Tendulkar add some vital runs to take the Indian total beyond the 500-run mark. It was an emotional moment for Tendulkar as held his bat and helmet aloft in each hand as he looked to the skies after completing his 38 ton, his third consecutive ton at the Sydney Cricket Ground, as the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Cricketer's Diplomacy Shame - Australian Dirty Tourney Part-8

Mr Peter Rebock said that they are Wild Dogs. Is it true? World cricket fans have not only to decide but also to contribute their views on the future course of actions by International Cricket Control (ICC) and various countries Cricket Boards. The so-called Australian Cricketers supremacy in the game and their means to gain the first place, both need review.

I will debate an issue of the Australian and Gori Chamri (White Skinned) countries which have not only followed the dual standards, but also had repeatedly exhibited a biased approach towards Gori Chamri European (GCE) and Black Chamri Asians (BCA) during various matches. Is it proper? Of course, yes to some extent. If the readers agree with the views what I said, I feel to applause; or else pardon Australian's for being inharmonic. Infact, I would say that Australians have been the worst players ever since Ponting assumed captaincy, The follow what I call Diplomacy of Dirty Cricket Abhorrence (DoDCA).

Firstly, at the very first instance I would like to discuss Muthaia Murlidharan of Sri Lanka to whom the Australians have made world famous as a Chucker. It was only Australian cricketer's sick minded gimmick to get their player at top scalping highest wickets. Despite of ICC clearance the Australian Cricketers were determined to get Murlidharan discarded. What a nonsense way of getting first place. I believe that the Australian Cricketers, who were afraid of playing magical spin of Murli, had tried to get him redundant as Chucker. What a shameful way of fame to gain first position. They have again played the same DoDCA with Harbhajan of India Cricket Team (ICT) and another Pakistani player. So far, all such gimmicks have given boost to High headed Australian Cricketers (HAC) which ultimately ended on 26 December 2007 when entire ICT was bowled out two create history for HAC through DoDCA. The HAC have time and again exhibited the bad sporting Spirit through;

One; un-player like conduct both on and off the fields;

Two; unsporting conduct at field;

Three; repeatedly exhibited Dirty Body Language Gestures (DBLG) on field;

Four; Trying to influence umpires through Nasty Visual Acts (NVA);

Five; repeated exhibited foul mouthed behavior when bowlers are hammered or batsmen are given out;

Five; telling lies to umpire which was clearly evident when Ponting appealed for a grounded catch for Indians at Sydney; and

Six; the most important is their Bigheaded, Arrogant and Egoistic behavior.

Secondly, I extend my heartiest felicitations to ICT and all the people who had condemned the bad Sporting Sprit of Game (SSG) exhibited by the present bunch of Cocky Offender Cricketers of Australia nick named COCA. How does it matters to a common man whether any player performs or not, but certainly it matters to most of the Indian Cricket Fans (ICF) and the World Cricket Fans (WCF) when their favorite players do not performs. Ponting had not only shamed the Gentlemen game but also shamed his own conduct and position as a gentlemen player. So far his DBLG have always exhibited bad facial and hand signs to visiting teams. His most soiled and condemnable act was when he nearly kicked out Mr Sharad Powar, the President of Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) before a photo session.

Thirdly, I would also debate about the role of umpires, their bad decisions and its effect on a Cricket Series. The six wrong decisions in one inning cannot be by errors or default but it is really planned. I would like to educate WCF as to:

1) How can an umpire give all six wrong decisions against ICT and not even a single against Australian players?

2) How could umpire not see a grounded ball catch?

3) Why ICC did not cancel the Sydney Test which made HAC sixteenth consecutive win through Proxy Umpires Deceitful Actions (PUDA)?

4) Why Ponting is not being penalized for willful lies for a grounded catch?

Some of my readers have said that the articles are deeply analytical which provide in-depth assertions about commitment of subject. I feel that:

A) ICT team should withdraw from Australia for the good of game;

B) BCCI should demand action against Ponting;

C) Australian Cricket Board should remove Ponting for cause shame to game;

D) Australian must play Cricket as a gentlemen Game;

E) Punish all HAC for bad DBLG and NVA.

At last I would suggest that India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other
African cricket playing countries to should ICC headquarters to Asia and remove the White hegemony forever. When most of the revenue is generated from Asian countries only, then why should ICC be dominated by whites if at all there is a sense of apartheid amongst White Skinned Europeans (WSE).

Cricket - Whose Game Is This Anyway?

Cricket used to be a gentleman's game. Now things times have changed thanks to Australia's positive tough uncompromising cricket.

Any more takers? Is it India's game or the umpires' or the third umpires' or the match referees' or the Boards' or the spectators' or the sports writers'?

Another basic question needs to be dealt with at this juncture. Australia had been playing positive cricket since at least the last decade and winning has become a habit with them. Now, do you need to be tough, do you need to resort to relentless sledging, do you need to keep on appealing vociferously for clear not-out decisions or to constantly pressurize the umpires, for playing positive cricket?

The second cricket test between Australia and India played at Sydney during 2-6 January, 2008 has now become a part of cricket lore entirely for the wrong horrific reasons. From the first day onwards the mystifying groundless decisions of the umpires directed at India all the time are there for everyone to see. With technology available at just a motion of the hands none of the umpires thought of utilizing it. When for once they referred to it even the third umpire made a glaring mistake, again, against India.

Australia was looking forward to equal its own record of 16 consecutive test wins achieved earlier by Steve Waugh. Was it Ricky Ponting's desperation to equal Steve so that he continues to prove his credentials for 'positive' cricket or that he remains in contention for further captaincy assignments? Was it for the same reason that his team mates too remained absolutely remorseless and unmoved?

India eventually lost the Test. The goal of 'positive' cricket had been accomplished. To add insult to injury the key spinner of Team India, Harbhajan Singh was banned for three matches on alleged racist comments against Mr. Positive Symonds. It was only natural that in India, a land of passionate patriotic cricket loving millions, there was a hue and cry. The fans indulged in protest demonstrations burning of effigies ominous epilogues and so on. The media cried 'Game of Shame', 'Villain Bucknor', 'Call Team India back' and so on. The Indian Board had to act tough. Even in the Australian media there were quite a few supporters who questioned this brand of positive cricket.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) tried its best to save cricket and the on-going Indian tour. The tables had turned again now. Being the most moneyed most powerful cricket nation of the world India lobbied hard and 'blackmailed' the ICC to rule in its favor, it was alleged.

Well, honestly, whose game is this anyway?

The Most Talented Cricketers In The World

After watching cricket for the last ten years to me it is rather easy to spot talent when i see it. The game gives those cricketers with a lot of talent the chance to make the big time and play on television which all fans love. Those cricketers include Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting, Afridi, Flintoff and Pietersen. There are many other talented cricketers out there but these ones are simply my favourites.

Tendulkar has perfect technique. His cover drives are clean and crisp. He can play off both the back and front foot and has taken most bowling attacks apart.

Lara has a flamboyant technique which is easy to watch on the eye. He has taken nearly every bowling attack apart as well, similar to that of Tendulkar, but more aggressively.

Afridi is simply a unique talent. His hitting is destructive to say the least and i would go on further to say he is the biggest and most cleanest hitter to ever play the game. He has so much talent, but often hes not included to play test or one day cricket for his country. Which is sad because so many people around the world are big fans of his due to the entertainment he brings.

Flintoff can bowl very fast and get a lot of bounce and he can hit a long ball. His bowling is his strong point, he is easily the best all rounder in the world at the moment.

Pietersen is a terrific batsmen. He is very aggressive, has all the shots in the book and likes big occasions.

The Indian And Australian Cricket Crisis

The recent India and Australian cricket crisis was started over some bad umpiring decisions and a dispute between Symonds and Harbhajan Singh. The Indian team also said that Australia was not playing in the spirit of the game, something I had to agree with.

The test match was a remarkable win for Australia but some of the things that happened were bad for cricket in general. Over appealing when the batsmen clearly had not hit the ball by the Australian team was there for everyone to see. The increased pressure and could be said excessive appealing also put pressure on the umpires which led to some inaccurate decisions. Overall it was bad for the sport and taken to be probably to big with the media, something we need to play down in the future but still deal with the problems.

I think it was evident that the Australian team did not play within the spirit of the game in the second test. But saying that I think they will learn from there mistakes and play in the spirit of the game into the future. To be honest they are a fair team, not in the last test with India, but usually they are very fair in everything they do.

Let's just hope things go well and this crisis stops, because its damaging our already fragile sport. With cricket being played in so few countries compared to other sports, we need to raise its profile and not damage its already small reputation. Both India and Australia are good and fair cricket teams lets hope they play well and have an entertaining and good natured series.

The Cheating History of Australian Cricket

Long before either cricket or Australia was discovered, hundreds of hardened criminal convicts, who were adjudged to be impossible to reform, in England were sent to this land which is now called as Australia, by the Order of The British Monarchy. The Monarchy and the British society was so afraid of social consequences of keeping these criminals that they finally thought exiling them to a no man's land would bring upon them the appropriate natural justice.

When they were taken to Australia, they were kicked out of the ship. Those who could swim over to the shore and later survive the adversities, built Australia on principles best known to them but are regarded by the civilized society as crime, treachery and cheating. But to their advantage, they were cricket players to the core, too, with whom alone England could play.

Come 1894, a tour by English team of gentleman cricket enthusiasts toured this land. There was no ICC, nor the representative boards but just the bunch of players volunteering in their individual capacities. Some 20 odd of them reached Australia after 3 months of voyage for a tour of 4-5 months.

All prevalent rules were flayed by the native players, they had the single point agenda, that was to establish their point of supremacy; they played 36 players against the 20 odd English in every match. They could bowl from any distance to any number of balls per over. They could bowl straight on your face or wherever their moods guided them. The matches went on for 7-9 days at stretches till players of one side called it quits.

By the time it was 3rd match, English tour party was reduced to 5-6 people; many had succumbed to injuries, others to sicknesses like malaria and plague which were rampant in those parts of the world at that time. English team was forced to play with fewer people inevitably, what was unfortunate was many of them were professionals accompanying the touring party who obviously had not played cricket anytime in their lives. The team captain had some how gathered some more persons of British origin to play their last tour game.

Today, Australians are an evolved lot going by their modernity, infrastructure they built; however, none of these is a big deal as any of these could be done with human efforts. What, without a wonder, hasn't changed a bit is their blood. As science has established, blood can't be changed or transformed; it only passes from generation to generation.

Ian Healy, the then Australian wicket keeper, had called Mohinder Amarnath a black and made racially derogatory comments in a match at Sharjah. See video clips here.

What to do with them? Is there anything we can do about this?

I simply wonder whether it is possible to reform an entire society at all. Have you forgotten the history?

South Africa Vs West Indies - Are West Indies Selectors Making Way for a Possible Brian Lara Return?

The just concluded West Indies vs. South Africa 2nd Cricket Test Match, which South Africa obligingly accepted and evened the series is an interesting case study of cricketing chess-if there is such a game. The West Indies won the first test in convincing manner and looked very much like the winning West Indies of yesteryear. What followed is not good cricket, but something else.

In the first test, under their new captain Chris Gayle, they attacked from the opening ball and outplayed South Africa in both innings with convincing batting and with hostile and accurate bowling. There were minor collapses on both sides. Good game all around.

The first surprise in the second test was the omitting of Darren Sammy, one of the most promising West Indian bowlers. He is young, strong, and talented with the bat--very close to being designated as an allrounder. In his place they put Rawl Lewis, a suspect spin bowler with one of the worst test records. The Caribbean's current international test spinner is Omari Banks. He never lost his test place. Up to the time of his only injury, he had performed exceptionally well with bat and ball. Had the West Indies really needed a spinner, they could have called for their tested and proven test match winner, Omari Banks.

Here is what Rob Smyth, Cricinfo Columnist wrote on Cricinfo's website on February 2006 about Lewis. "Legspinner Rawl Lewis had an undistinguished entry to Test cricket. In his three Tests for West Indies, he bowled 97.3 overs. Of those 585 balls, only one brought him a wicket, that of South Africa's wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, caught by Brian Lara at Johannesburg in 1998-99. That single strike has cost Lewis 318 runs. For a time he captained Windward Islands in the Red Stripe Bowl but rather than develop as a player as he got older, his form dropped away. He looked destined to go down in history as one of the most ineffective bowlers in Test history until he got a second chance when he was picked for the 2006 tour of New Zealand. He came into contention on the basis of decent performances at the domestic level. In the 2005-06 first-class season he picked 24 wickets at 17.54 and in the season before that he grabbed 32 wickets at 26.43."

On the other hand, Darren Sammy, the 24-year old St. Lucian had played two tests. In his first test in England last year, he bowled 17 overs, of which 7 were maidens; he gave up 32 runs and bagged one wicket. He had the best bowling average (1.80) of all the West Indian bowlers. Darren Sammy played in the winning South African first test. In the second test, the wicket favoured seam bowling. As a rule, cricket teams do not change winning combinations. In the first test, Sammy bowled 4 overs in the first innings, of which two were maidens, and he conceded 6 runs. With the bat he made 38 before being run out. In the second innings he was LBW for 6 runs. In the second innings, his 7 overs cost him 29 runs; however he claimed one wicket when it mattered. His side won the test.

I have my own views on the politics behind Darren Sammy's exclusion. However, one has to wonder: except in Antigua, Barbados and all the new smaller venues, cricket attendance has dropped in the Caribbean. The demise of cricket means a reduction of status for all those associated with the game: selectors, cricketers and officials. In a media-starved environment, that is not good.

Suddenly, news of former batting star Brian Lara rejoining Trinidad's regional competition is piercing the Caribbean and international new media. Everyone knows that to be eligible for test selection to the Caribbean team, first one has to play for a regional test side. Next, one has to be tops in the category one wants to get selected. Since lately, all the top West Indian batsmen are performing very well, except for opener Darren Ganga, a suspect hooker. In today's game, one must be an expert hooker to be consistent among the runs in an opening position. Even though Nevis showcased two promising youngsters in Kiernon Powell and Tonito Willet during last year's Stanford20/20 Cricket tournament, instead of blooding them for the Caribbean World Cup hosting last year, regional sportswriters and selectors pretended they had not seen them.

Since they continued with the suspect Ganga in the opening position, here is the problem. Ganga's career was pushed with the blessing of Lara when he was captain. Lara does not like to open. He is not only a nervous beginner, but has difficulty with the new ball in his nervous moments. Lara does not bowl. When the wicket favoured swing bowling, had Sammy played, not only could he have made a tremendous difference with injuries to Fidel Edwards and Chris Gayle, but also possibly by now he could have been certified as a legitimate allrounder. Batting and bowling allrounders on a West Indies team are invaluable and very hard to replace because they can help in both batting and bowling departments. Lara is an excellent fielder, superstar and flashy player, and it is no secret that his flashy playing, though many times to the detriment of his other team players, could help to return the large crowds to the stadia. Lara scored a century last week in Trinidad and Tobago's game against Guyana--weeks prior to the biggest Caribbean cricketing extravaganza-- STANFORD 20/20 TOURNAMENT. Lara is automatically eligible for selection to the Trinidad side. A good showing on that international arena, and all the media-starved will be clamouring for his re-instatement. I smell something very Machiavellian here. Was Lewis a pawn in a bigger chess move? Since Chanderpaul is the perfect team player, do not be surprised to see Chanderpaul opening in the next series and Lara returning to the West Indies team.

Cricket - Love It Or Hate It, But You Simply Cannot Ignore It

Cricket as a sport has always intrigued me ever since childhood and although the reasons kept changing with my growing years, but the fascination has still remained intact. The sport has only managed to grow in popularity over the years as new formats are being introduced. There are fresh faces to be seen with each passing year, more countries participating in the game and of course the primary reason being that some players seem to become larger than the game itself. As our advertisers and marketers would agree, that anything promoted by a current reigning god of cricket, is sure to be well received by the masses and whatever the product or service may be, getting cricketers to endorse it, is sure to work and sell products like hot cakes.

Cricket as a game has survived the test of time and has emerged a winner. In some nations, it has managed to create a niche for itself in the hearts of the compatriots and now reigns supreme like a religion, which unites the nation. The affection of the fans is as fickle as the performance of the players. The urgent need to stay connected to scores of a live match has led to the advent of specific online sites that are entirely devoted to cricket. A cricket enthusiast who had to leave the space in front of the television in order to get some work done at office, is now no longer in a perpetual state of depression due to missing out on live updates. Internet sites constantly update the scores of every live match being played and the individual keeps pace with every ball played, with the help of his computer.

Now imagine the worst nightmare of a cricket fan. He is stranded in traffic with no access to a television, radio or a computer and a live match is in progress! In addition, horror of horrors, he cannot get through to the phone of his friends who are lucky enough to be watching the game. However, websites devoted to it and telecom service providers have done away with this kind of a torture for cricket fans. The live scores can also be sent to your mobile phone via a short message to the related website. Now cricket score deprivation is indeed a thing of the past and best forgotten.

The fans who are strongly attached to the game can further utilize the cricket special sites. The websites not only offer live score updates but also the whole paraphernalia associated with the game. Be it posters, images of the players, records and statistics and general news and information related to the game, one can find it all on a cricket related website. A true fan will also thoroughly enjoy the discussion forums that are an integral part of such websites. Therefore, if this is what makes your heart beat faster then it is time to try out every avenue connected to the game and connect to the world through this amazing game.

Stick Cricket Games

Stick cricket is an online cricket game that runs on Adobe Flash. The game was created and developed by Cann Creative, a company based in Sydney, Australia. The information on the game’s official website humorously states that the stick cricket game was the result of someone from the Cann Creative team trying to learn how to make flash programs. The idea caught like wildfire, and the team decided to cash in on the popularity of the game.

The game was called stick cricket because the earliest version of the game featured stick figures acting as batsmen. But as the game evolved, a number of upgrades have been implemented, and the current version, which is version 4.1, now features human batsmen.

The point of stick cricket is to score as many runs as the player can. A player of a stick cricket game can play using these different modes:

1. Tournament. A player can participate in a tournament and beat the score of the national team. It is a progression until the player reaches the World Champions. The tournament format of the stick cricket game is patterned after the ICC Champions Trophy.

2. Slog. In a slog, the player has to score as many runs as possible within the given 10 overs. Here he or she plays against a selected team, or against the World Domination play done by another stick cricket player.

3. World Domination. In World Domination mode, players get a password if they have beaten a national team score within 20 overs. The player’s team will go to the draw if it wins.

For those people who have no experience of playing stick cricket, the game is also available in practice mode. Here, the player can chose a type of bowler and just play practice games. The scores he or she gains here are not saved.

Stick cricket is an addictive game for those who are into cricket. Another fun thing is that the game itself has many hidden features, which are called Easter Eggs. The Easter Eggs can be activated by clicking on certain objects in the game, or by typing certain passwords in the World Domination password box.
